My Adventure at Homecoming Havoc

Homecoming Havoc on February 23, 2005 at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana, California was the first time I had ever attended an independent wrestling show. Based on my experience I don't think it will be the last. What follows are the highlights of the night, along with some blurry pictures I took. Unfortunately there were some rather large gentlemen sitting at the table in front of us, so it was hard for me to get a clear line to the ring. Also, because I turned the flash off, some of these pictures weren't as good as they could have been. All these images are thumbnails, click to enlarge.

The first match was one of the most entertaining on the card. The two wrestlers involved were The Drunken Irishman and The Human Tornado. They were both a lot of fun to watch. Having never been this close to the ring before, it was interesting to note their technique. This match was won by the Human Tornado.

The second match featured a wrestler named Ma'Koa. He was quite intense (that's him on the right). I swear, I thought he looked right at me when he entered the ring. Likely it was someone sitting behind me, but it made me watch the match more closely. He was against Marshall Knox who wore leather chaps and a cowboy hat, and carried a cowbell to the ring. Knox won the match, which prompted chants of "more cowbell."

The next match was a four-way tag team match. This also featured great work by all the wrestlers involved. Even though I didn't know the stories involved, the crowd seemed to, and so I thought this was an excellent example of storytelling. The three teams who ended up being eliminated were Tommy & Johnny, The Ariel Express, and Pinoy Boy & Eric Matlock, and the winning team was Shawn Riddik and Antonio Mestre. That's Riddik on the left, he was one of the hardest workers in the match.

The next match featured Oliver John against Apocalypse. Apocalypse is a rather large individual with his face painted to resemble a skull. That's him facing the camera. He seemed to dominate the match, and ended up winning.

Next was an appearance by Tough Enough's Daniel Puder. He offered a $1000 dollar challenge to the University student who could last one minute with him in the ring. He said that since he had "a million dollars" a mere thousand didn't seem like much to him. Despite heckling from the sidelines, Puder managed to outlast all the students.

Then Lil Nate came out. The two had some great interaction which ended up with Puder slipping out of the ring and running around the outside. At that point the timekeeper declared his watch had stopped, and that Nate had not won the challenge.

That brought Frankie Kazarian out. Frankie challenged Nate to face him in the main event for the UPW Light Heavyweight Title.

Due up next was Jesus but he was interrupted the same way Puder was, by Tank Abbott. I wasn't close enough to hear what Abbott was saying, but the crowd ate it up. Rick Bassman came out to ask Abbott to leave, and security escorted him from the building.

Jesus had a long run in UPW as the Hardcore Kid. He cut a rather lengthy promo that seemed squarely aimed at the largely male audience. He talked about his rehab, about Carlito, and about how he looks forward to going after John Cena when he returns.

Next up was the match I really came to see: Sean O'Haire and Chuck Palumbo. I have been a fan of O'Haire for a rather long time, but had never seen him live. They had a long, and highly entertaining match with Tom Howard and Predator.

Tom Howard is the current UPW Heavyweight champion. The crowd seemed really behind him. At one point O'Haire had him laid out, and he shouted "Where's your boy now?" He and Palumbo ended up losing the match, and Predator came after them with a chain.

The final match of the night featured Frankie Kazarian against Lil Nate. Lil Nate is only 18 years old, and he was amazing. This match was very entertaining with many near falls. Even though the outcome was assured (Kazarian signed a WWE developmental deal earlier in the week) they still put a lot of effort into keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Lil Nate got a great ovation when he won the match.

After the show was over, Kazarian delivered a speech, thanking everyone in UPW, and announcing his WWE contract. All of the UPW wrestlers came out, along with Bassman, to show support.

It was truly a night of wrestling to remember. I enjoyed myself immensely. We were invited to stick around afterwards to mingle with the UPW stars, and so of course we did. We spent a bit of time talking to some of the fans, and then the wrestlers started to drift in. We met many of them, but a few stuck out.

First of all was Daniel Puder. What a heck of a nice guy. He seemed pleased to meet us, and genuinely happy when I told him I'd voted for him in the Tough Enough competition. He told us that he'd been hoping to make it in UFC before wrestling, but that when TE came along his plans changed. We asked him how he liked OVW, and he said it was great. He had high praise for Jim Cornette, Danny Davis, Lance Storm, and Al Snow.

I didn't get good pictures of this match, but Lionheart was involved in a match with Andrew Hellman and Scott Lost for the UPW Mat Wars title. Scott Lost ended up retaining the title. Lionheart was also a great person to talk too, as he seemed genuinely interested in talking to us.

Homecoming Havoc was a great show, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to attend it. I can't wait for the next UPW show!
